Reality TV show comes to the studio…

July 28th, 2009

Hi everyone.

Have you ever wondered what it is like to be on camera for a TV show? I have.   Now, I know what it is like-woh. It was an interesting day. There is a new reality TV show about a guy, Chris, and he owns his own marketing agency and he happens to be a runway model too.  Anyway…Chris is being followed everywhere that he goes (that would kill me) and he scheduled a shoot in my studio with me  and since part of the show will document the modeling aspect of his life, the film crew came too.  I am under NDA so I can’t tell you the name of the show or what it is about or any details at all but I did clear this blog and a few photos of him.

The film crew consisted of 3 guys and a girl.  There was the main video and sound guy, another video guy, another guy from NY and a “behind the scenes” photographer. Cool. There was a “behind the scenes” photographer, She was super cool.  We had makeup (they hired Maris and I was so excited because I love working with her).  Of course, Natalie (my assistant) was there and then Chris was there too.  Oh, his girlfriend came too for part of it.   Okay, so I do the shoot and the video camera is on me while I am taking pictures and directing and that was totally weird- I hope I looked okay, wah wah wah.  For those of you that know me…YOU KNOW HOW I HATE BEING PUT ON CAMERA, that is why I am a photographER not a photographEE.  When it was all done at the end of the shoot, we sat around my desk and we had to talk about the photos (we had a couple of takes) and then we were directed to shake hands over the table and all that jazz.  Overall, it was quite an experience.  Anyway, I cleared it with them that I could post these photos from the shoot to show you a little of what we did.

I think we all had a great time and I think we got some nice shots today.  For the photographers reading this out there, I am seriously proud of the awesome rim light on his back, neck, and head in the last (nude) shot. I think it is awesome. This effect is achieved by using a carefully placed 6 foot softbox and an even more carefully placed silver 7′ reflector. It is a little hard to see in a small photo but it does go all the way to the top of his head and I was very happy with the lighting results. Yes, he is nude but it is a great way to study the lighting and how it hits the body. All the right parts are highlighted and all the right parts are shadowed to show dimension.

Enjoy.

Extreme Makeovers

June 2nd, 2009

Hi Everyone! Yes, another blog from me.  So, many of you know that my studio offers EXTREME MAKEOVERS and I have a couple here that I would like to share. My goddaughter Taylor has been visiting me for the last week from Phoenix and I have been so excited to have her here! The one thing we planned on doing were some fun photoshoots for her.  She loves photoshoots and she gets to have me do them for her-FOR FREE  and I love doing them, she is 16 now and she has been a huge part of my life since before she knew how to speak.

On another note, I always talk about makeup. Makeup and hair are so important to photography (well, I think they are) because they are what can make or break a photoshoot. They are important on clean, fresh looks or CRRRRAZY looks as well.

Anyway…enjoy the  makeovers.. oh , btw..Taylor IS BOTH GIRLS on the bottom image. For photographers, that was a joy to light both photographs so that they would match when the two were put together!  aie.

Model portfolio showcase: Megan O'Leary

May 16th, 2009

Well, since so many of you have commented that you like to see my fashion or editorial work..I have decided to do a new thing on my blog:  Featured Model portfolios.  Why not?  Why not represent the modeling talent that is in Texas and the world.

So, for my first model showcase: Megan O’Leary.  Megan is represented by Neal Hamil out of Houston.  What do I love about Megan?  I think she is smart and funny and we were able to create really awesome images together.  I love her energy! She has a certain something that just SHINES on camera.. Here are a few images of Megan that I have taken.

I want to be a fashion model..

April 29th, 2009

“I want to be a fashion model”, I hear that all the time so this blog is for all the aspiring models out there.

If you choose to be a model as a career then you need to make an investment in your career. If you choose to be a doctor, your primary investment is to go to med school.  If  you choose to be a model, your investment is in your looks and your attitude.

Things to consider to be a model..

Your height.  There are agencies that are willing to take you if you are 5′9″ but most want taller for runway

Your weight. Your weight is important and you need to ensure that your body fat percentage is low, stay healthy

Your skin. Take REALLY good care of your skin, that is the first thing that people see

Your movements.  Some people move naturally and some people don’t.  You need to practice walking, you need to practice posing. Research fashion shows, practice and emulate the walk and then put your own spin on it.  Sounds silly but all that practice is also an investment in your future career choice

Your body. You have to be comfortable in your own body and you need to be comfortable with people seeing it.  During a runway show you will have to get dressed and undressed in front of other people. Models sometimes are asked to pose semi nude or nude (I am not referring to glamour-style nude) but there are times you may and frankly this is very common if you are going to be in high fashion and in Europe.  You need to be able to handle that or understand that you may not get chosen over someone else who is okay with it

Your ability to take rejection. Modeling is a harsh world. You will likely have lots of rejection whether it is agencies that turn you down or potential employers that chose someone else.

Your portfolio.  Be careful who you photograph with and what types of photographs you are in.  You will need full body shots, you will need head shots, you will need shots with very little makeup if none (often referred to as polaroids) and a gambit of other things. Your photographs are what a potential employer will see and those will be what separate you from the other models that they plan on bringing in to meet as well.

I am not saying that if you have all those things under control, you will automatically get signed somewhere but they should  improve your odds.

By the way, congratulations to Izzy for getting signed with  RED, NY and to Lindsey for getting signed with RACE, NY and with Michele Pommier, Miami over the last couple of months, I am really proud of them-It was a pleasure photographing them both and doing what I could to help them in their modeling careers.
