Congratulations to Lauren and Ryan

July 18th, 2010

I am blogging about Lauren and Ryan today. Lauren and Ryan were married yesterday, July 17th at One World Theatre.  This was my first time photographing at One World Theatre, I really really liked it.  Here are a couple of photos of the location.

I met Laruen’s mom and dad at J’me and Michael’s wedding in June of 2009 and at the end of that wedding, Lauren’s mom, Michelle, informed me that they would be “honored to have me photograph their daughter’s wedding”.  That statement stuck with me a long time-still does. Anyway, Michelle has become one of those ladies that have touched my soul and I am so thrilled that I was the one chosen to photograph her daughter’s wedding!

So… anyway, Lauren and Ryan are awesome kids. I really enjoyed working with them!  They are so sweet and so fun and I was so excited to be there on their special day.  My favorite two favorite moments were the first time that Humberto, Lauren’s dad, saw his daughter in her dress and  the moment we unveiled her bridal portrait to everyone.  Unveiled? Yes. I did a digital oil painting of her bridal and so we decided to do an unveiling like artists would do in the olden days. We kept a sheet over the portrait, an announcement was made and everyone stood around the portrait and we unveiled it. WOW to see the look of Ryan, her dad, and everyone else’s face when they saw it was priceless. Her grandmother went over the painting and stood there for what seemed an eternity and cried. She was so happy for her granddaughter and that touched me.  I have a special place in my heart for grandparents, I always wanted grandparents but they passed away when by the time I was 5 years old. I secretly adopt any grandparent that I meet :)

Anyway.. enjoy a few photos from the wedding

I love “love”

April 9th, 2010

SPRINGTIME. FLOWERS.LOVE. Can it get any better?

Have you ever been in a restuarant, or on a boardwalk, or some place and watched people?  I do and I love it when I see “love”. No matter the ethnicity, No matter the age, No matter economic status…people who are in love always look good. I might be on to something here… Anyway, one of the reasons why I love to photograph engagement sessions or weddings is because I get to see people in love all the time. I think it is uplifting… :)

Anyway, congratulations to Kendall and Michael as they are getting married at the end of May and we just completed their engagement session and I had such a great time. They are so much fun and we laughed the whole time-EXCEPT for the moment when we saw a HUGE, TEXAN TARANTULA.  There is a potential that I may have screamed like a 5 year old girl..I am admitting to nothing. I just was not expecting it, that’s all. oops.

Here are a few moments in their day with me.

Austin Wedding Day February issue is out

January 10th, 2010

Okay, the title gave it away: the new Austin Wedding Day Feb 2010 issue is out. I am excited to share with you that two of my weddings were featured in the magazine and I photographed the cake spread for them as well.

On the cake spread… I made cakes look sexy, ha ha is that possible? No, it isn’t possible, I don’t make cakes…Simon Lee Bakery made cakes look sexy and I photographed them. Mmmmm….cake. If you are an avid reader, you know I don’t really like cake EXCEPT for the white cake with fresh strawberries and a cream cheese icing from Simon Lee Bakery.  AAAAnnnywho…  Here is a photo of one of their cakes.  FYI: Their takes taste amazing as well!

On to the featured wedding section…I have two featured weddings in the magazine.Several of my my brides or grooms or couples get into magazines for this or that, so that is always fun. Here are snippets from the magazine

 J’me  (pronounced Jamie) and Michael:

I loved the couples of mine that the magazine picked for their magazine. The first couple: J’me and Michael. What can I say? I love them!! I talk to them all the time and it is so much fun. Actually it is funny but we (them and I) think they are a younger version of my husband and I. They CRACK me up.  They were married at Villa Antonia last June and we just finished their “after the wedding” session.  We wanted to do it in the winter time .    The funny thing about these two is that when people see their photos all they say is..”they can’t be a REAL couple, they must be models”.  I tell them that and they laugh and they never believe me that I hear that all the time.

Jenny and Jordan:

The other lovely couple that the magazine featured were Jenny and Jordan; are also two of my faves.  I love them both so much. Jordan, he is a very funny guy and he keeps me laughing all the time.  Jenny, she is an amazingly giving and genuine person. I love her like a sister, a sister I never had. They are both awesome and they balance each other out. Jenny is quiet and calm and Jordan is outgoing and effervescent.  Ha ha…I guess they are a lot like Eric and I too.  I am not the calm, quiet one. Yes, I know you already knew that-geez. Oh and…if you are looking for a wedding planner and you want a beautiful venue for your wedding, Jenny is the wedding planner at the Renaissance Hotel!!  That is how I met her so long ago and she chose me as her wedding photographer and now… she is famous ;-)   I am trying to figure out how to get them to pack me in their suitcase and take me to Cuba with them so I can photograph it.  Jenny and Jordan were married at Chapel Dulcinea. Love them too!

Anyway, you can get the magazine at Barnes and Noble (I love that place but I can so rarely go there because I never seem to leave there without losing $50.00 or more…ugh). ALSO, they are having their BRIDAL show on January 31st, 2010 in San Marcos.  If you are a bride, go check it out.

Maria is 2009 APPA Professional Photographer of the Year

December 10th, 2009

Hi. I am so excited. Wanna know why? Well, I might venture to say you already know since the title kinda gave it away. Ha ha. Anyway,as you know Eric and I have been in Europe over the last couple of weeks and got home just in time to go to the Austin Professional Photographers Association (APPA) annual Christmas party at the Renaissance Hotel and…bum bum bum, they gave me a trophy for APPA 2009 Photographer of the Year!  That was so exciting for me. That was an honor for several reasons-why, ask you? Well, let me tell you.

Number 1: I’m not gonna lie to you–it is AWESOME to win another trophy. For those that know me, I tend to be quite competitive BUT…here is the thing, I don’t just want to win a trophy because it is a trophy. I want to win it because I put in hard work.

Number 2: Not a lot of people knew this but It was a SUPER close race this year between me and Carrell Grigsby who is a master photographer and there was only one point separating us for Photographer of the Year as of October 31st, 2009. ONE POINT?? Drrraaaammma! I love it. I HAD to win in November in order to get PPA Photographer of the Year. Well, let me tell you about Carrell. Carrell has been in PPA for a long time, she has competed for many years and I have been competing since October or November 2008 (only about one year). Why am I telling you all of this? Because of this: Carrell’s competitive drive and Carrell’s wins made me want to be better. My print in November was made because I thought it was my only shot at potentially beating her. Now, I am not digging on Carrell so if you are reading it like that-don’t. Kiddies, the point of this whole thing is that this is what PPA competition is really about. Becoming better and better and pushing yourself to do things better because there is someone who you perceive is better than you. Carrell knows the rules on competition, she follows them and she has won enough to get her masters.  Competition prints require some extra stuff due to all the rules!

In my acceptance “speech” last night, the first person I thanked was Carrell for making me want to be better. She and I have talked about this way back when and we have known about the one point between us. Ha ha! We were talking about “Bringing it” to the November meeting to see who could actually cinch the title this year. Carrell and I are friends and further more, I look up to her and she knows from the bottom of my heart that had she not been there with some strong prints this year, I may never have reached some new levels in my own personal photography growth. She sent me a message last night and it was titled “for your blog”.  I read it this morning and I quote “You can quote me anytime saying that I’ve never had so much fun coming in second.”-Carrell.  Big compliment for me. Thank you Carrell.

Wow, was that a sappy blog or what? totally. ha ha

Well, onto the summary of the year. Here are the awards that I have won this year and a small slideshow with the images that have led me to getting this trophy.
APPA:
Monthly conpetitions: 3 First place, 3 second place, one third place ribbons
Annual competition: 2nd highest print case, Trophies for Best Portrait, Best Illustrative, and Best in Show

TPPA Texas State Convention: Trophy for Best new entry. Trophy for Best Wedding Album. Distinguished print award.

SWPPA (South West Regionals, 6 states): 3 merits out of 4 prints entered. Two distinguished print awards.

Here are those photographs, enjoy! REMEMBER, if you are viewing this on an iPHONE, you cannot see these images (flash) and if you are an outlook subscriber, you actually need to go to the web www.mariabernalphotography.com/blog to see the photos.

Model portfolio showcase: Megan O'Leary

May 16th, 2009

Well, since so many of you have commented that you like to see my fashion or editorial work..I have decided to do a new thing on my blog:  Featured Model portfolios.  Why not?  Why not represent the modeling talent that is in Texas and the world.

So, for my first model showcase: Megan O’Leary.  Megan is represented by Neal Hamil out of Houston.  What do I love about Megan?  I think she is smart and funny and we were able to create really awesome images together.  I love her energy! She has a certain something that just SHINES on camera.. Here are a few images of Megan that I have taken.

Congratulations Ginny and Santiago!

April 7th, 2009

Well, this is my first blog. I guess this is a good one to start with .

Have you ever met folks and thought to yourself…”I hope I know them for a long time?”.  It turns out that I feel that way about all my brides and grooms and their  families.  Here is another prime example: Ginny and Santiago.  They just got married and I had a blast photographing them this weekend. Their wedding was held in Smithville, Texas. Okay… I want you all to know that Smithville is a REALLY CHARMING town.  I had a blast photographing on those streets; here is a photo of the girls hanging out downtown.  The ceremony was held in this itty bitty little church and it could not have been any more perfect-apparently, Ginny’s family has been attending this church for over 80 years. The reception was at the Hyatt Lost Pines and it the ballroom was gorgeous, well done Hyatt!

Being a fashion and details fan, let’s talk about the bridal clothes!  I loved the dress, it was an asymetrical cut and it was awesome on her.  Her veil…of course custom made by my favorite veil maker in the world, Dorene from  unveiled bridal designs- I do have a soft spot for birdcage veils. The flowers…Brenda Abbott, need I say more?

Anyway… Ginny and Santiago were so much fun to hang out and laugh with. I truly enjoyed every moment of the wedding ! Congratulations Ginny and Santiago!!!!!
